Effects of Amino Acid Density and Protease Addition to Laying Hen Diets on Performance, Egg Quality and Nitrogen Excretion

Abstract

In this study, the effects of commercial protease enzyme supplementation to diets with different digestible amino acid levels on performance, egg quality parameters and nitrogen excretion of laying hens were evaluated. The study was carried out with 336 Brown Nick laying hens from 26 weeks to 56 weeks of age. The experiment was conducted with 4 treatment groups and 12 replicates with 7 animals in each replicate. In a factorial arrangement, 4 dietary treatments (2 amino acid levels; normal and 6% lower x with or without enzyme supplementation) were randomly assigned to the experimental blocks. Protease supplementation to Brown Nick laying hens had no significant effect on egg production, egg weight, feed intake, feed conversion, live weight, egg quality and nitrogen excretion, while amino acid levels had significant effects on egg production, egg weight and weekly feed intake, but these effects were not reflected in the overall experiment. The interaction between amino acid levels and protease addition was found to be statistically significant; Haugh unit was improved with protease in standard amino acid diets, while there was no significant change in low amino acid diets. The interaction between amino acid levels and protease supplementation was statistically significant for the ratio of nitrogen excreted to nitrogen consumed.  Nitrogen excreted improved with protease supplementation in normal amino acid diets, while there was no significant change in low amino acid diets. It was concluded that when digestible essential amino acid requirements are met according to the ideal amino acid profile, it is possible to reduce the recommended protein and amino acid levels by 6% without adversely affecting performance and egg quality in commercial brown layers. Furthermore, protease supplementation has no significant effect on hen performance or egg quality of brown layers at these amino acid levels.
