Abstract

This study investigated the nutrient composition, protein fractions, energy levels, and salt content of chickpea straw, an alternative roughage source in ruminant feeding. For this purpose, chickpea straw samples were collected from six different livestock farms using chickpea straw in Konya and Karaman provinces. The collected samples were analyzed for Weende and detergent fiber (NDF, ADF, ADL), protein fraction (N fractions), total digestible nutrients (TSBM), metabolic energy (ME), net energy lactation (NEL), and salt (NaCl) content. According to the research results, the average dry matter (DM) content of chickpea straw samples was determined to be 92.61%, crude protein (CP) level 4.97%, NDF ratio 52.94%, ADF ratio 39.72%, and ADL ratio 10.83%. In terms of energy values, the average ME level of the samples was calculated as 1.56 Mcal/kg, NEL value as 0.90 Mcal/kg, and TSBM ratio as 49.17%. When the protein fractions were evaluated, it was determined that the majority of the total protein, 71.92%, was in the form of rumen-degradable protein (RDP), while 28.08% was rumen-undegradable protein (RUP). The salt content was found to be 0.48% in dry matter. These findings indicate that chickpea straw include the category of medium-quality roughage in terms of nutrient content, that its salt level is within acceptable limits, and that it has the potential to be used as a low-cost, alternative filler in ruminant rations.
