Abstract

Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is one of the most significant pests affecting citrus fruits in Türkiye. This study was conducted in 2022 to evaluate the effectiveness of mass trapping for medfly control and to assess damage rates in early and late citrus varieties grown in the villages of Danışment, Araplar (Sağdıçlı), and Çağırkanlı, located in the Yüreğir district of Adana Province. Mass trapping was carried out in five mandarin orchards across Danışment, Şıhmurat, and Çağırkanlı villages using 100 Decis traps per orchard, resulting in a total capture of 4,843 medflies. The highest medfly population density was observed in the Rize orchard (Danışment village) with a peak mean capture of approximately 6 adults per trap on September 6. In Çağırkanlı village, the second Döbashi-Beni orchard reached a peak of 1.64 adults per trap on October 7, while the Miho-Wase orchard sustained a maximum mean of 2.59 adults per trap on the same date. The Primasol orchard (Şıhmurat village) recorded a peak mean capture of 0.67 adults per trap on September 20. The Döbashi-Beni orchard (Danışment village) exhibited two modest peaks with mean captures of approximately 0.45 adults per trap on September 6 and 0.44 adults per trap on November 1. Weekly inspections of 1,000 fruits from each orchard throughout the season revealed no Medfly damage across all mandarin varieties. These results highlight the variable seasonal population peaks among orchards and underscore the critical role of fruit phenological stages in medfly attraction, providing essential insights to optimize pest management timing within the region.
