Factors Affecting Dry Onion Production Preference: Example of the Central District of Amasya Province, Türkiye

Abstract

Although Turkey possesses high productivity potential and favorable geographical conditions for onion cultivation, the sector faces several structural and economic challenges. This study aims to identify the factors influencing onion producers’ production preferences in the Central District of Amasya Province. Logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the variables affecting farmers’ decisions regarding onion production. The results indicate that agricultural production in the study area is predominantly carried out by experienced farmers, while young and female producers also have the potential to participate actively in agricultural activities. The main factors contributing to the reduction of onion cultivation areas include insufficient family labor, high input costs, low product prices, and irrigation problems. To overcome these challenges, it is recommended to strengthen incentives for young and female producers, promote agricultural mechanization and cooperative organization, reduce input costs, expand contract farming and guaranteed purchase systems, and encourage the adoption of modern irrigation technologies.
