Abstract

This study was conducted in Ambo university, Ethiopia to evaluate the effect of white rot fungi Pleurotus ostreatus (PO) on organic matter (OM) composition, mineralization and fiber constituents of crop residues (wheat straw and maize stover), and their chopped mixtures at different levels. The experimental treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications for each treatment into a treated and untreated groups. For chemical analysis, the spawn (Mushroom seed) of Pleurotus ostreatus was developed on yellow colored sorghum grain, wheat bran and calcium sulfate was prepared and used for the treatment of different levels of crop residues (wheat straw and maize Stover) at 100%; 75%: 50%, 25% wheat straw and 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% maize stover. The data obtained from the experiment were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) in a generalized linear model (GLM) of statistical analysis software (SAS Version-20). The result of the experiment showed that treating/incubating wheat straws and maize stover and their mixtures at different levels with PO significantly (P<0.05) reduced the neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and acid detergent lignin (ADL) were also significantly reduced by 6.32% and 5.27%, respectively. The fungal treatment similarly improved (P < 0.05) mineral composition of the crop residues in all treatments; and the rate of changes occurred in mineralization were significant, appearing to range between 12.31±.01 and 22.99±.01 for wheat straw and maize stover, respectively. This suggested that the Pleurotus ostreatus could be used in treating low quality roughage feeds such as wheat straw and maize stover to enhance their feed value through reducing the less digestible fiber fractions such as ADF and ADL; and improving mineralization.
