Analysis of Land Use Change Effect on Transportation Networks Greenness Level with GIS: The Case of Adana City

The environmental, social, economic and health benefits of urban open and green spaces are of great importance in improving the quality of urban life. If these areas can be identified, their effects on the comfort of people living in urban areas can also be examined. In this study, using OpenStreetMap data, the greenness level of transportation networks in urban areas is examined using a green index. With this index, information about trans-portation networks close to and far from green areas can be obtained. Information about how much green space is in which region and which transportation networks are close to green areas can be obtained. At the same time, with the help of this index, it is possible to compare the quality of living spaces according to the distances from the green areas to the areas where people live. In the study, the change in land use cover was also examined in order to determine the changing green areas over the years. When the land use maps pro-duced by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) for the years 2017 and 2023 are analyzed, approximately 24,697.4 hectares of green areas were found in 2017, while 25,590.3 hectares of green areas were determined for 2023. From 2017 to 2023, when the land use cover change map is analyzed, it is observed that green areas have increased. By integrating the greenness index map for transportation networks into urban transportation plans, necessary arrangements can be made in areas where there is a lack of access to green areas. New open and green areas should be created in areas close to transportation networks, especially in neighborhoods such as Onur and Yüzüncüyıl, where the green index is low. With the increase in green areas, it will be easier for people to access these areas and people's urban quality of life can be further improved.
