This study was carried out to determine the effects of dried narrow-leaf plantain herb (Plantago lanceolata) supplementation into feed on performance, yolk pigmentation and other egg quality characteristics in nutrition of laying hens. In the study, a total of 150 laying hens with Lohmann Sandy genotype at 56 weeks of age were randomly divided into three treatment groups as control (no supplementation), and two different amounts of supplementation of plantain herb into control feed (1. Dose: 0.5 kg per ton feed and 2. Dose: 1 kg per ton feed). At the end of the experiment, any significant differences were observed for egg laying performance and feed consumption (P>0.05). On the other hand, egg weight was found to be the highest with a value of 61.8 g in 1. dose group, and the lowest with a value of 58.6 g in the control group (P<0.05). Feed efficiency was found as 2.06, 1.94 and 2.02 in the control, 1. dose and 2. dose groups respectively (P<0.05). The supplementation of dried plantain herb provided an increment in egg yolk percentage and a darkening in egg yolk, when compared to the control eggs (P<0.05). The egg yolk color was observed as values of 9.2, 12.6 and 12.4 of Roche color fan in the control, 1. dose and 2. dose groups, respectively. In conclusion, the supplementation of dried narrow-leaf plantain herb at an amount of 0.5 kg per ton feed could be recommended as a natural source for egg yolk pigmentation in nutrition of laying hens, respecting to improvements in egg weight, feed efficiency and yolk color.
